Tips for Hiring a Pet Sitter

Hiring a pet sitter is a serious process, but can be fun and exciting as you will be starting a new relationship with someone to care for your extended furry family!

Make sure the person you choose is trained and professional.  He/she will not only be responsible for your pet, but also will have regular access to your home! Working in the pet care industry, you hear tragic stories about people leaving their pets in the care of an untrained person.  We recommend that you choose an OPSA, NAPPS or PSI pet sitter.

Once you have identified a potential pet sitter:

  • Develop a set of questions

  • Conduct a thorough interview

  • Ask for references

  • Request proof of bonding and liability insurance coverage

  • Make sure he/she interacts well with your pet

  • Make sure you have all the necessary info and keys to provide your sitter should you decide to hire them.

Professional pet sitting and dog walking services are not required to obtain any type of industry licensing. However having a proper business license can be a good thing and let's you know that the sitter is serious about their business. Look for bonded and insured services that can provide proof of insurance at your request!

You also may want to check out their standing with the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no serious complaints against the company. Pet first aid training and/or certification from NAPPS or PSI are also desirable traits in a pet sitter.

But most of all you want and need to feel comfortable with your sitter, you need to trust that they will take care of your animals and your home while your away! They should give you peace of mind and you should have a good feeling in your gut, I know that's old school, but it's true.  My mom always says, "go with your gut."
